What to Expect During a Fingerprinting Appointment

Fingerprinting is often required for employment, background checks, and security clearances, and knowing what to expect can make your experience smooth. Here’s a quick guide to help you prepare.

1. Scheduling and Preparing for Your Appointment

Book your appointment in advance, and bring a valid ID and any required forms. Avoid hand lotions, as they can interfere with print quality. Arrive a few minutes early to complete any paperwork.

2. Checking In

At the facility, you’ll check in with a technician who will verify your ID and any paperwork. This step confirms that your details align with the agency’s requirements.

3. The Fingerprinting Process

There are two main methods:

  • Live Scan (Digital): A technician guides you through placing each finger on a scanner, capturing a clear, high-quality image. This method is fast and common.

  • Ink-and-Roll: This traditional method uses ink and paper but is less frequently used.

Each scan takes only a few seconds, and the entire process usually takes 10–15 minutes.

4. Wrapping Up

Once all fingerprints are captured, the technician will confirm that all prints meet quality standards. You may receive a receipt or confirmation document, especially if it’s required for employment or licensing.
